We have discussed how appearance affects your personal brand, but what about your online presence? It is just as important, if not more important! In the digital age we live in, our online personalities have become a big part of who we are. People that may not have had the opportunity to meet us will associate us with our online personalities. We suggest building your online personal brand by following these steps: 1. Engage, 2. Review, 3. Monitor.

1. Engage. Engage yourself via social media. Being a “social media butterfly” takes work, just like being a socialite in the real world does. You have to make yourself relevant by getting involved, being seen. Participate in conversations (perhaps Twitter chats, such as our own #PRCafe) to build credibility and connect with others, comment on interesting articles/blogs, re-post articles/blogs, etc. Make sure you are on all major social media websites – Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, a blog, etc. And don’t just be “on” them, be active on them.

2. Review. Review your current social media content. If there is anything that you wouldn’t want posted on a billboard with your face attached to it, then do not put it on social media. Delete any pictures or comments that portray you as irresponsible, immature, a drunk, etc. You will want to delete excessive party pictures or any comments that can be misconstrued – anything overly sexual, political, etc. If you wouldn’t talk to your grandmother or your boss about it, don’t post it.

3. Monitor. Monitor your brand. Review what others are saying and posting about you. While you can control your output, you can’t control those of others. They still affect your online reputation. Occasionally do a Google search on your name or any online usernames affiliated with you, and see what others are posting about you. If it is negative, try to contact them to have them delete it. Everything that is related to you will effect your personal brand, even if you are not the creator of it. Be sure that you only have positive online content.

So remember, online/social media presence is an important aspect of your personal brand. Be sure to engage, review, and monitor your online personal brand!

5 Ways to Get More Social Media Followers

26 May

ImageSocial media has become an imperative part of public relations campaigns, especially if you want to reach larger and younger audiences. There is a high chance that you are currently managing your own business social media accounts or the accounts of clients. But what if you do not have many followers or much interaction with your followers? Then your social media campaign may be lacking. It’s pointless to even utilize social media if you are not seeing results. So what are the companies who have thousands of followers doing that you’re not? Here are a five tips to drive the number of followers and interaction you get on your social media accounts.

1. Be conversational. It’s important to remain professional while on social media, but make sure you don’t sound like a robot. People prefer to follow and interact with social media accounts who actually seem like there are indeed humans making the posts, not an automated system. Not all of your posts have to be relevant to your company or product. Make comments that you might make on your personal accounts about the weather, the season finale of a popular TV show, current news events, etc.
2. Ask questions. This one seems obvious, but if you want more people to interact with you on social media, then ask! Ask people how they’re doing, what they’re having for lunch, and other simple conversational questions. But also feel free to ask for input on your business – what new menu item customers want to see at your restaurant, what their favorite piece of your new clothing line is, etc.

3. Ask for user involvement. Encourage users to post pictures on Facebook, check-in to your business on FourSquare, tweet your business, re-tweet your tweets. This can easily be done through social media contests. (The most re-tweets will get a free t-shirt or free meal, the best user photo of an event you had will win a prize,”like” your status for a chance to win a pirze, etc.)

4. Respond to users. If people tweet to you, respond! Even if they’re not asking something, simply say thanks for getting in touch with you. Retweet them. If they complain about something, definitely make sure it is addressed as soon as possible. People love when companies tweet them.

5. Post at non-traditional times. Many companies have people in charge of handling their social media accounts during regular business hours, but be sure to post during non-traditional times as well – like in the evening or late night hours. You can schedule these tweets ahead of time, with services like Social Oomph.
These five tips are sure to increase your followers and/or your current follower interaction. Just remember that just as with anything in PR, it is important to stay up-to-date on new social media tools and trends. There is actually a method of how to handle your social media accounts, so don’t just “wing it,” make sure whoever you put in charge becomes knowledgeable on how to be most effective with social media.

We all are well aware of the impact that social media has for our clients. Nearly everyone is on social media these days. We do it to seek information, to interact with others, and to pass the time. There are tons of different social media websites, some more successful than others. Facebook and Twitter have grown to be the two biggest players in the social media world. They both have the ability to reach large audiences, and the interactive aspect creates and maintains strong relationships with consumers. In 2011, Google+ was the hot new social media trend for brands. But what about Pinterest? Is it the hot trend for 2012?

Pinterest allows users to create virtual bulletin boards on various topics – favorite recipes, clothes, beauty products, wedding ideas, home decor, and fitness are popular themes amongst users. They “pin” pictures that they like on to their boards. Users are able to view their friends pins, comment, and “re-pin” pictures on their own boards. The pictures are often linked to outside websites and blogs.

Companies are beginning to see the growth and popularity Pinterest is having. While still far behind Facebook and Twitter, Pinterest is emerging as a leader in social media with over 10.5 million users. Many industry experts say that Pinterest will be the newest trend for PR professionals and advertisers to implement in their social media campaigns for 2012 and beyond. Clothing stores, restaurants, and other brands are creating their own Pinterest accounts to showcase new products, run contests (“pin it to win it”), and engage with consumers.

What do you think? Is Pinterest here to stay or just another social media fad that will soon be forgotten? How do you think it compares to Facebook and Twitter in effectiveness for PR and advertising campaigns?
